French Onion Soup
🧅 Patience Secret

Do not rush the onions! Slow cooking them on low heat for 45-60 minutes is essential to get that deep, sweet, dark caramelization. This is the heart of the soup.

Ingredients

  • 4 Large Onions (Thinly sliced)
  • 1 L Beef Broth
  • 1 cup White Wine or Sherry
  • French Baguette, Gruyere Cheese
  • Butter, Olive oil, Thyme, Bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: Sauté sliced onions in butter and olive oil on low heat until dark brown.
  2. Add Wine: Pour in white wine or sherry to deglaze the pan. Simmer for 5 mins.
  3. Broth & Simmer: Add beef broth, thyme, and bay leaf. Simmer for 30-40 minutes.
  4. Toast & Cheese: Top soup bowls with toasted baguette slices and a generous amount of Gruyere cheese.
  5. Gratin: Place under a broiler until the cheese is bubbling and golden. Serve piping hot.
